I now build web sites of usually more than fifty pages around particular kinds of product or service. (Search engines like sites with a particular and narrow focus rather than broad sites that try to include everything.) I do not at the moment have any opt-in Email lists and I do not use any kind of Email marketing.

People will say that I am missing huge opportunities by not having an opt-in Email list. This is probably true. However, I believe that people are becoming increasingly wary of signing up for any kind of Email letter. Also legislation is tightening up on spamming and I feel that anyone who operates an Email list needs to be very careful about how they use it. I would prefer in many ways not to have that responsibility.

So my revenue opportunities are derived entirely from carefully structured web sites and their integration with the search engines. At the moment I rely mostly on free traffic.

Do not take what I do as gospel. Everyone has their own take on how to make a living on The Internet and there is no one way to succeed. Many would regard my approach as naïve and unlikely to have a long-term future. It is in the nature of this business to be unable to predict how things will pan out eventually. One has to follow ones own hunches!

My advice would be to try to work out a strategy that suits your temperament and your skills. Persevere with your efforts, refine your technique and learn as you go along. You may be able to make an approach work that no one else is using. If this is the case, you may well have found a strategy that few others are using. If it works for you, stick with it. Above all, learn everything you can but be confident also that you can find a way through the maize. Trust your instincts. Believe in yourself.
